Performance results from the first two weeks of operation of New Zealand's prototype Vortec 7 wind turbine (Windpower Monthly, June 1997) show promise says its developer. According to Vortec Energy Ltd, the diffuser-augmented wind turbine has increase the inlet wind speed at the rotor to 172% of the prevailing wind speed. "The challenge now is to identify the areas of diffuser improvement to push performance even higher, and to address in more detail the conversion efficiency of our available energy to electricity output," says Vortec's Robin Johannink. The machine's performance over the next three months will be evaluated independently by the University of Auckland and Industrial Research Ltd, a research institute.
