Americans in India

With funds for wind farms in India rapidly nearing exhaustion, the need for other forms of financing--and at reasonable levels of annual interest--is essential if the infant wind market is to be sustained. The coming together now of a giant such as the Enron Corporation with a leading wind farm developer, Zond Corporation, will pave the way for a wider flow of wind farm financing.

I would like to extend a welcome to the Enron-Zond wind initiative. It is heartening to read of this development in the US wind industry (Windpower Monthly, February 1997). With funds for wind farms in India (at high interest rates) rapidly nearing exhaustion, the need for other forms of financing -- and at reasonable levels of annual interest -- is essential if the infant wind market is to be sustained.

Danish, Dutch and German aid packages are limited, so the coming together of a giant such as the Enron Corporation with a leading wind farm developer, Zond Corporation, will pave the way for a wider flow of money for financing wind farms in India. Enron has become a household name here after the controversy surrounding the Dabhol project.

A decrease in the cost of energy from the wind can be achieved as much from improved financing conditions as improved technology. With America's Export-Import Bank coming forward to finance green projects in India such as wind, photovoltaics and small hydro, the future for wind farms here with US turbines is expected to be bright -- especially with the American "think big" approach.
