Classification society Germanischer Lloyd is planning to include lightning protection in its Regulations for the Certification of Wind Energy Conversion Systems. The details of how to do so will be discussed at an expert committee meeting on February 8. Much attention is being devoted to the problem of lightning strikes in the wind business. Germanischer Lloyd is not certain whether fixed rules are appropriate at the moment. It seems more likely that recommendations will be made with a catalogue of possible measures for lightning protection, including the requirement of a "manufacturer declaration." It seems too early to include a "design approval," however.

Enercon reports that it has installed its 500th, 500 kW E40 turbine in Germany. The machine was installed at a site near Gütterlitz in Thüringia.
