IES Iowa contracts

Negotiations for three wind contracts with Iowa's IES Utilities were expected to be finalised by the end of last month. A month earlier, the utility had announced letters of intent with Zond Development Corp and Northern Alternative Energy for wind plants of 9.75 MW apiece. A third and larger contract was also in negotiations with an unnamed wind company, said IES' Diane Ramsey. Although the third contract had been anticipated, a letter of intent had not been formally announced by the utility in Cedar Rapids. The negotiations follow the signing of a power purchase agreement for the equivalent of 112.5 MW of nameplate wind capacity between Zond and MidAmerican Energy Co of Des Moines, Iowa (Windpower Monthly, April 1997).
