First turbine at Gunfleet Sands

The first turbine to be built under the second round of site licences granted for offshore wind development has been installed by Dong Energy at its Gunfleet Sands II wind farm off the Essex coast, north-east of London. The 64 MW project of 18 Siemens 3.6 MW turbines is the smallest of the second round sites. It forms part of a larger 172 MW wind farm which includes Dong's 30 turbine project from round one, being built at the same time. The wind farm is expected to begin production in 2010. The installation of the first Round 2 turbines coincides with a 50% increase in support for offshore wind (page 29). Gunfleet Sands is the oldest of Britain's offshore projects, having won government support in 1997. In the past it has been owned by global power companies Enron and GE Energy, among others, before Dong bought Gunfleet Sands in 2006.
