The European Commission has launched a consultation to identify barriers to offshore wind development in Europe and what can be done to overcome them. Offshore wind is expected to play a significant part in helping Europe reach its 20% renewables target by 2020. Wind is expected to supply 12% of the 35% green electricity required, with a third of that coming from offshore wind. The consultation will feed into an offshore wind action plan. The Commission wants to hear from investors, project developers, turbine manufacturers, energy companies, government bodies and environmental organisations. It is particularly keen to know what actions need to be taken at EU level. The online consultation is open until June 20.
