Utility Wind Interest Group grows

A total of seven new members have joined the US power industry's Utility Wind Interest Group (UWIG). That brings utility membership to 31, of which 28 are utilities. Among the newcomers are the Arctic Energy Alliance, made up of the Northwest Territories Power Corporation of Canada and citizen and green organisations interested in boosting the use of wind power in the territory, and Madison Gas & Electric, a Wisconsin utility. As recently as 1996 there were just 16 members (Windpower Monthly, February 1998). It is only this year that UWIG has opened its doors to non-utility groups such as the Arctic Energy Alliance, an indication of how the traditional boundaries in North America's electricity market are fading fast.
