The 90 MW Alinta wind farm near Walkaway, 25 kilometres south of Geraldton in Western Australia (WA), has been officially opened by state premier Geoff Gallop. Comprising 54 Vestas NM82 1.65 MW turbines, it is WA's largest wind farm to date. The project is a joint venture between local utility Alinta and Renewable Power Ventures, a grouping of Western Australian company Carbon Solutions, US developer National Power and London merchant banking group Babcock and Brown. "Diversity of electricity supply is essential so that we continue to have a range of energy sources such as renewable energy, rather than relying on one specific power generation source," says Gallop.
