Plans to expand Zafarana 63 MW project with overseas aid support

Egypt's New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA) is planning to further expand its huge Zafarana wind farm project beyond the 63 MW in operation and the 77 MW to be built this year. NREA says another expansion, with overseas aid support from Spain, is being planned, while a Japanese supported project may follow later. Meantime, NREA has picked Vestas to supply the next two phases at Zafarana, a desert location about 200 kilometres south-east of Cairo at the Red Sea. Both Denmark and Germany are granting the project overseas aid. A EUR 36.6 million grant from German development aid bank Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW) coupled with EUR 6.8 million from Egypt, allowed NREA in January to choose a German led consortium of Vestas Deutschland, ABB New Ventures of Mannheim and Kolaly Engineering of Cairo for construction of Zafarana phase three. Within that budget, the consortium is supplying 71 turbines for 47 MW of wind power generation. The previous month, NREA announced that Vestas in Denmark is to supply 46 turbines for a 30 MW, EUR 25 million phase supported by Danish overseas aid organisation Danida, to be completed this year. The two orders follow Danida and KfW's phase 1 projects at Zafarana. Danida's project comprised 50 Nordex 600 kW turbines, while KfW's comprised 55 Nordex 600 kW turbines, all now in operation.
