German utility RWE Energie has finished mapping the wind resource for two regions within its vast supply area. The aim is to have the whole area charted for wind speeds, grid connection potential and grid connection costs by the end of 1997. The Monschau-Simmerath local council in the inland Aachen district has been presented with RWE's wind map for its area, along with Euskirchen, also in North Rhine Westfalia. The RWE Energie initiative, costing the company several million Deutschmark, has been criticised because the utility could effectively dictate wind development in its supply area.
