Construction work on what is being flagged as Germany's first commercial offshore wind station is set to start in May 2009. The 52.5 MW Baltic 1 project, located about 13 kilometres north of the Darss peninsula on the Baltic Sea coast, is being developed by WPD and will comprise 21 Nordex 2.5 MW turbines. Water depth at the site is 15-19 metres. Nordex will assemble its turbines on monopole foundations, which are being produced by subcontractors retained by WPD. Nordex is developing its offshore business cautiously, says CEO Thomas Richterich. The company has had a pilot 2.3 MW offshore turbine in operation just off the Danish coast at Frederikshavn since 2003 and a 2.5 MW version operating 500 metres from the quayside at the port of Rostock since February 2006.
