Praise for jobs

Federal environment minister Jürgen Trittin visited wind energy planning company Umweltkontor Renewable Energy in Hückelhoven in May, praising the wind industry.

More metal is now processed for wind turbine components than for the German shipbuilding industry. Federal environment minister Jürgen Trittin let this titbit slip during his visit to wind energy planning company Umweltkontor Renewable Energy in Hückelhoven in May, though he did not also point out that shipbuilding is far from being one Germany's major industries.

Trittin praised the creation of more than 20,000 jobs in wind power, an industry in which ten years ago planners and developers were written off as dreamers. During his visit, Trittin climbed a 1 MW DeWind Technik turbine installed at Übach-Palenberg in the district of Heinsberg. Fog clouded his view of the surrounding countryside, but Trittin magnanimously said that climbing the more than 200 rungs of the ladder up the turbine tower "was still worth the effort to see what an innovative company like Umweltkontor can achieve."
