Spanish blade demand leads to Denmark's LM Glasfiber expansion

Denmark's LM Glasfiber is close to completing a EUR 11 million extension on one of its three blade making facilities in Spain, the Ponferrada factory. It is also considering extending its six year-old As Pontes facility in Galicia, Spain's top wind region. LM says that Spanish demand for blades of 30-50 metres is increasing as megawatt technology gets a hold in the new wind-boom regions. Only LM Glasfiber's six-year old facility in Toledo, Castile-La Mancha, has so far been able to cope with blades of that size. The expansion at Ponferrada will allow for larger blades and also boost production capacity by 50%. For the first half of 2002, 49% of all LM blades were for machines rated above 1.3 MW. Moreover, the company reports that 22% growth in turnover worldwide was "attributable to a higher level of activity in the Spanish and Indian markets ... which are expected to see positive development for the rest of the year."
