New resource study ups national wind potential

A re-assessment of the Indian wind resource has more than doubled the potential for wind power projects. Preliminary estimates by the Ministry of Non Conventional Energy Sources (MNES) had indicated a potential of about 20,000 MW. Now, MNES places it at about 45,000 MW. MNES is preparing a master plan for 80 potential sites in ten states based on mean annual wind power density. Mapping of a wind atlas for the entire country is another major project underway, according to M. Kannappan of MNES. In its assessment, the ministry has found 177 potential wind plant sites in 13 states, including 39 in Tamil Nadu -- the state that today accounts for 70% of India's existing wind power generation.
