Proposals for more than 1000 MW of new capacity have been lodged in the first round of Ireland's latest competition for renewable energy, making it ten times oversubscribed. The deadline for initial registrations of interest in the third Alternative Energy Requirement (AER III) closed April 30. "We have had a colossal response," says Mark Crosby from the Department of Transport, Energy and Communications. He adds that wind accounts for the bulk of applications. Renewable energy developers are chasing 15 year contracts for 90 MW of wind, 7 MW of biomass and 3 MW of hydro capacity. The department is at present appointing an independent agency to take over all further stages of the competition. At the end of June, tender packs should have been sent to all registered developers who will have until the end of July to return their tenders containing their bid prices.
