Wpd Windmanager said thefts and vanadlism are causing six-figure sums worth of damage at their projects.

"Access for offenders is often made easy by remote turbine sites and insecure standard doors lacking special
burglary protection," said Wpd Windmanager technical manager Gerrit Baerwald.

The operator said solutions from turbine or tower manufacturers are "often very costly and sometimes not available on older turbines".

"The sum resulting from repairs and downtime per occurrence can easily reach six-digit figures," added Baerwald.

Wpd is desiging new mechanical protection systems in-house, and will then commission a steelwork company to produce them.

"We are focusing primarily on mechanical burglary protection systems, among them veneers for filter inlets or special locking systems for doors," said Philipp Luers, also in Wpd technical management.
