Environmental group WWF Scotland, analysing data from WeatherEnergy, said Scotland's 5.3GW of wind turbines generated 106% of the country's electricity needs over the whole day.

Very high winds, recorded at over 180km/h in some mountainous areas, coupled with lower demand over a weekend day, were the principal factors.

According to EnergyWatch, wind power provided 39.54TWh to the National Grid, while total electricity consumption for homes, business and industry was 37.20TWh.
