CHINA: DNV GL has certified an upgraded version of Ming Yang's Aerodyn-designed 1.5MW low-wind turbine.

The Chinese turbine manufacturer has developed a new 89-metre rotor for its workhorse 1.5MW turbine in order that it can be used on sites with low-wind regimes. The previous model used a 77-metre rotor.

Ming Yang CEO Chuanwei Zhang said that the certification was "an important step towards the internationalisation" of the turbine, indicating ambitions to install the turbine beyond the company's Chinese home market.

The three-bladed MY1.5-77 machine, on which this new model is based, is developed from a design by Aerodyn. But Ming Yang has independently developed the new blades for the MY1.5-89, according to the company's 2013 full-year report.

Ming Yang has also adapted the turbine for use on high-altitude projects.

After a difficult 2013, Ming Yang made a bright start to the year, posting strong results for the first quarter showing profit, revenue and orders up.

Revenue increased by 52% compared with a year earlier, to hit CNY 1.2 billion ($194 million). This was largely due to an increase in the number of turbines commissioned during the period, the company said.
