Vestas returns to number one in BTM survey

WORLDWIDE: Vestas has regained its position as the world's number one wind turbine supplier in the latest annual OEM research by BTM Navigant.

Last year, GE moved into top place following a strong 2012 performance in the US, knocking Vestas into second. This year Vestas has 13.1%, followed by Goldwind on 11% and Enercon on 9.8%.

Other notable outcomes of the research include Suzlon Group dropping two places to seventh place, with subsidiary Senvion held back by a poor performance from Suzlon.

Additionally, Nordex has crept into the top 10 following a strong performance in Europe and the emerging markets in the Middle East and Latin America. GE has fallen to fifth place with 6.6% of the market.

The figure largely coincide with Make Consulting's research. However, one major difference was with regards to GE. According to Make, it had a 4.9% share of the market, while BTM put it in fifth place with a 6.6% market share.

Overall, the average size of the turbine installed continues to rise. In 2013, this was 1.926MW and a 79kW increase on 2012's figure. In Denmark, it was as high as 3.326MW while in India it was as low as 1.336MW. Offshore wind turbine size dropped by 180kW to 3.613MW.

Another rise was in the use of direct drive, with 28.1% of all turbines installed in 2013 using this type of drivetrain. This was a 47% rise on the 19.5% figure for 2012.
