Vestas creates 140-metre tower

DENMARK: Vestas has revealed a new large-diameter steel tower that it claims could allow for an up to 8% increase in generation.

The tower is designed for Vestas' 3.3MW platform

The tower has been designed for use with the company's 3.3MW-range of turbines and will hoist the hub height of the machines to 137 metres.

On a site with a mean wind speed of 6.5m/s, Vestas believes that the tower will increase annual energy production from a V126-3.3 MW by up to 8% compared to a standard hub height of 117 metres.

Vestas claims that the tower offers a cost-effective way to increase hub height as the resulting increase in strength required for the taller tower is achieved without adding extra steel through the use of a wider diameter lower section.

Increasing the height of a tower increases the force exerted by the wind on the base of the tower. Generally, this requires the use of thicker steel plates in the lower sections.

This new tower has a bigger diameter on the bottom section, boosting the strength while only using a small amount of extra steel.

However, the greater diameter of the tower presents a challenge in terms of transportation. Vestas claims to have solved this by delivering the bottom tower section in three lengthways segments that are then reassembled on site.

Vestas has already received the first orders for turbines that will use the new tower. Finnish developer TuuliWatti Oy has chosen to install 30 V126-3.3MW on the new tower.
