Germany adds most onshore capacity since 2003

GERMANY: Germany saw more onshore wind capacity new online in the last twelve months than in any single year over the last decade, according to an end of year assessment.

Around 2.5GW of new onshore wind capacity is newly commissioned this year compared with 2.3GW in 2012.

It is the greatest increase since 2.7GW was clocked up in 2003, according to the Fraunhofer IWES institute on 12th December 2013.

Uncertainty over the future of Germany's renewables' support mechanism seems to be driving developers to get onshore wind online before potential cuts in payment kick in.

However, 2013 has been a relatively weak wind year. Despite the newly added capacity, onshore and offshore wind generation is expected to each only about 46TWh in 2013.

This is below the 50.7TWh in 2012, and 48.9TWh in 2011, as reported by energy statistics organisation AG Energiebilanzen.

Commissioned German offshore wind capacity currently amounts to only some 521MW.
