Gamesa investigates G80 fire in Oaxaca

MEXICO: Gamesa technicians are investigating a fire that burnt out the nacelle of one of its G80-2MW machines at the 74MW Bii Nee Stipa II wind farm in Oaxaca, Mexico, on 26 November.

Both Gamesa and the plant owner, Italy's Enel Green Power (EGP), have ruled out any criminal activity and there is no police investigation.

"Damages only affected equipment; people were not harmed," an Enel Group spokesman told Windpower Monthly. The fire was extinguished the same day and the plant, located in La Ventosa, has resumed operations.

Gamesa's investigation, supervised by EGP, is expected to take weeks. Until it produces compelling evidence, neither company will speculate on the causes of the fire or comment on reports regarding a short circuit.

Gamesa is responsible for operation and maintenance at Bii Nee Stipa II. The company also developed and built the plant, which it sold to EGP on completion in 2012.

Regarding reports of police officers removing photographers from the incident, Enel explained the authorities had set a security perimeter of 800 metres because of strong winds.
