The Switch 8.6MW generator clears first hurdle

FINLAND: The Switch has said that its 8.6MW permanent magnet generator has passed its first no-load testing.

The medium-speed, rear-mounted generator uses both low- and high-speed technology, which the company claims will improve output, particularly at partial loads. The medium-speed component is intended for offshore use and has a low weight.

The full-power liquid-cooled converters are modular, which the company believes will extend the life of the generator and lower maintenance requirements.

Fixed-magnet generators are seen as a better option for offshore turbines due to their higher reliability compared with double-fed induction generators.

Since the generator is intended for geared turbines, it only requires 10% of the magnets needed for a direct-drive generator of the same power rating.

The component will be put through its paces again "in the coming weeks" as it is subjected to full-load tests, the firm said.
