Xinjiang adds 1GW wind power in four months

CHINA: Grid-connected wind power capacity in north-west China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region reached 4GW by early November, according to State Grid's Xinjiang department.

The north-western state has installed 1GW since June this year, taking its total to 4GW and accounting for 12% of the 32.8GW total grid capacity of the region.

Wind power development in Xinjiang is accelerating as the grid company spends more than CNY 500 million ($82 million) every year to transmit clean energy from Xinjiang to other big power consumption provinces.

According to the company, the 800kV HVDC transmission project from Hami in Xinjiang to Zhengzhou in Henan province will be put into operation by the end of this year, which will further boost wind power development in Xinjiang.

State Grid estimated that by 2015, grid-connected wind power in Xinjiang will reach 9GW, of which 6GW will be transmitted to other provinces and regions.
