Six make 65MW Jordan bid

JORDAN: Six companies have submitted bids to engineer, procure and construct a 65-75MW wind power plant in Jordan near the southern city of Maan.

An announcement is expected within the next two weeks.

Earlier this year, Jordan's Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) shortlisted twelve companies, with a strong showing from Spain and China.

Chinese companies selected were: Goldwind with CWE; Sino Hydro Corporation; China National Technical Import and Export Corporation; China Electrical Engineering; SEPCO III Electric Power Construction Corporation; and HydroChina Corporation. From Spain, TSK Electronica y Electricidad; Isolux; Elecnor; and Cobra all pre-qualified, as did Vestas and GE. It is not yet known which submitted final bids.

At the same time, MEMR has called for expressions of interest (EOI) from companies interested in investing in renewable energy projects in Jordan on a build, own and operate basis.

This, the second round, is uniquely for wind and solar projects, with priority given to projects in the north and east of the country. EOIs must be in by 14 November, and MEMR will select the best projects within six months.

Successful candidates will sign a memorandum of understanding with MEMR enabling them to develop their proposal. Wind power plant will be eligible for a feed-in tariff capped at JD0.085/kWh (EUR0.087).

The first round, launched in May 2011, has so far resulted in just one wind project for 117MW at Tafilah . Cabinet approval is expected shortly.
