The project, jointly owned by Northland Power and Mnidoo Mnising Power, a First Nations company with a 50% stake in McLean's Mountain, will feature 24 of the US manufacturer's 2.85-103 machines.

Northland Power CEO John Brace said: "Recognising the unique topography of Manitoulin island, we decided that GE's 2.85MW 103 model wind turbines were the best fit to meet the project requirements."

GE will also provide operations and maintenance through a ten-year full service agreement.

The company made the announcement at the Canadian Wind Energy Association's annual conference, pointing out its turbines account for 29% of Canada's total installed base of just over 7GW.
