Broadwind picks up $87 million tower order

UNITED STATES: Tower manufacturer Broadwind has received a $87 million order from an unnamed US wind turbine manufacturer.

The order is to be delivered later this year. No other information was revealed about the destination of the order or the customer.

Broadwind has received a number of supply deals this year from "an unnamed US manufacturer". These include $27 million and $35 million orders in February and March respectively.

The statement from Broadwind CEO Peter Duprey was similar to that issued for the other orders. Duprey praised the declining cost of energy and the production tax credit (PTC) for the "the rebound of the US wind energy industry".

It follows a difficult 2012 for the US tower manufacturing sector. Over the last year a number of US tower manufacturers have closed factories, including Trinity Industries and Katana Summit.

In January, the US government imposed sanctions of up to 73% on imports from the Far East, raising concerns that  the US could be facing a supply bottleneck this year following the renewal of the PTC.

Despite the influx of orders, Broadwind still sold one of its three tower manufacturing factories for $11.7 million after putting it up for sale in 2011.

The Brandon plant, which Broadwind said had been idle, is located in South Dakota. It was originally put up for sale in Q3 2011 as part of a plan to reduce production capacity by 600,000 sq ft. The sale means it has 200,000 sq ft left to go.
