Windpower TV - Opportunities for European companies in Taiwan

TAIWAN: Windpower Monthly interviewed Lynn Li, UK Trade and Investment's Taipei-based head of infrastructure at RenewableUK Offshore 2013 about opportunities onshore and offshore in Taiwan.

Taiwan announced its first pilot project in January and Li told Windpower Monthly at the conference in Manchester today that the country hoped to have 3GW of offshore wind installed by 2030.

However, extreme environmental conditions including earthquakes and typhoons mean that a huge amount of research and development will need to be done before such large levels of installed capacity can be achieved.

This represents a significant opportunity for European firms, said Li, given Taiwan’s trade restrictions on the level of goods that can be imported from China.

Some UK firms, added Li, were already working with Taiwanese companies on onshore turbines.
