EGYPT: Egypt is consolidating its post-Arab Spring resumption of wind deployment with a state request for proposals (RFP) to build, own and operate a 250MW wind project in the Gulf of Suez.

Contenders for the project are competing on a feed-in tariff auction basis, according to sources connected to the bidding process. The project will be located in Gabal El Zeit.

The RFP follows a previously suspended call to tender to build six 100MW projects developed by the state-run New & Renewable Energy Authority (NREA).

It also coincides with resumed building work of NREA's 200MW wind project using 2MW turbines from Spain's Gamesa and towers from El Sewedy Wind Energy Generation (SWEG).

Egypt leads the North African-Middle East wind market with 550MW online. The government plans 7.2GW of wind power by 2020.
