Vestas launches three new V112 variants

DENMARK: Vestas has launched three new variants of its V112 3MW turbine platform, including a 3.3MW low wind version with a 126-metre rotor.

The company announced it is bringing out the V112 3.3MW, the V117 3.3MW and the V16 3.3MW. This follows the launch of the V126 3MW turbine in September last year.

Vestas said it had already received three orders for the turbines totalling 100MW. This includes the Noerhede Hjortmose project in Denmark.

Anders Vedel, Vestas CTO said: "The addition of the V117-3.3 MW and increasing nominal power by 10% across all our 3 MW turbines has enabled the entire platform to deliver greater energy production. At a low wind site based on certain conditions, choosing a V126-3.3 MW instead of a V112-3.0 MW turbine boosts annual energy production by up to 19.5%."

The first prototypes of the V112 3.3MW have been installed in Denmark. The other two new variants will be installed at test sites in July and August this year with a view to going into production this year.

The V112-3.0MW flagship prototype was Vestas's most important product launch since the lightweight V90-3.0MW turbine was introduced in 2003.

The V112-3.0MW marked a return to traditional drive technology for Vestas. While its predecessor, the V90-3.0MW, had introduced a compact integrated drive system, with the new V112 Vestas returns to conventional wind technology, but offering a 55% larger rotor-swept area.

The turbine's technical features include a non-integrated drive system, a permanent magnet generator and a passive liquid-cooling system.
