The turbine, which has a 108-metre rotor and targets medium wind speed locations, has been designed in conjunction with Shanghai Electric.

According to Siemens, the new machine has received upgrades to the power conversion system. It is manufactured at the Shanghai nacelle and blade facility set up between the two companies in December 2011.

Siemens and Shanghai Electric have set up two joint ventures – Shanghai Electric Wind Energy Co. for wind turbines sales, and Siemens Wind Power Equipment (Shanghai). Shanghai Electric holds 51% shares and Siemens 49% shares of the two joint ventures. They went into business in July 2012.

On the launch of the joint ventures, Shanghai Electric said it hoped the alliance would promote it into the top end of Chinese manufacturers.

In 2010, Siemens and Shanghai Electric won their first joint offshore wind power order to supply 21 2.3MW turbines to the Longyuan Rudong inter-tidal Wind Farm. The turbines went into operation in May 2012.
