Wind supplies 26% of Spanish electricity

SPAIN: Wind power was the biggest single generator in Spain from November 2012 to January 2013, covering 26% of demand, according to provisional grid operator figures -- the first time wind has been top in the national electricity mix for a full three-month period.

Specifically, grid operator Red Eléctrica de España (REE) estimates wind production during the period at 16,410GWh, 36% up on the same period a year earlier.

Winter winds produced 6.329TWh in January 2013; the first time wind has exceeded 6TWh in a month.

The figures underline REE's claims of "world-class" grid integration measures. Due to only feeble interconnection abroad, REE needs to balance Spain's sizeable and variable wind output mainly internally.
