Vestas has built a test hub at its Isle of Wight research centre for the 80-metre V164 blade.
In designing the blade, Vestas switched from a box-type structural coning spar to a shell design. The blade root diameter is 4.6-metres.
Vestas' 18-month research facility was custom-made for the development of the V164 blade.
The completed blade will have a 33-tonne mass. The first prototype turbine is set to be built in 2014.
