Siemens wins 126MW order in Ireland

IRELAND: Siemens has won a 126MW order for its 3MW direct drive turbine from Irish utility Bord na Mona for two onshore projects.

The deal is for 28 SWT-3.0-101 turbines to go to the Mount Lucas wind farm in County Offaly, near Dublin, and 14 turbines to go to the Brukana wind farm, in County Tipperary, central Ireland.

Both projects are set to come online by mid-2014. A 15-year service agreement is also included in the contract

According to Windpower Inteligence, these will be the first turbines Siemens has installed in Ireland since 2009 when it extended the Meentycat project in Donnegal.

Speaking about the deal, Siemens CEO Felix Ferlemann said: "This is the first order from Ireland for our direct-drive wind turbines. Globally, we have already sold more than 800 wind turbines of this type for on- and offshore wind power plants."

Siemens launched the SWT-3.0-101 at the 2010 EWEA show. It can be used for both on and offshore projects.

The company claims that apart from the nacelle, all the main components — blades, rotor hub, tower and controller — have been developed from existing products.

The use of fewer components in the machines means the nacelle will be 6.8 metres by 4.2 metres and can be transported using standard vehicles.
