Vestas sells 90MW Chilean project to Enel

CHILE: Italian renewable energy group Enel Green Power has signed a conditional purchase agreement for Vestas' 90MW Talinay project in northern Chile.

Vestas announced it was funding the construction of the project in September last year. At the time it was to be Chile's biggest wind farm.

Talinay's funding by Vestas also surprised industry insiders, as it is rare for the Danish manufacturer to take up an owner-developer role. It was originally set to be 100MW.

Coincidentally, at the time of last years announcement, Enel announced plans to spend $570 million on Chilean renewables projects over the next five years, including a wind farm in the north of the country.

Enel is increasingly targeting wind opportunities in Brazil, Chile and Mexico as it seeks to break out of a declining domestic market.

In a presentation of its 2012-16 strategic plan, EGP said it would invest roughly €6.1 billion to add 4.5GW of new capacity, 38% of which should come from emerging markets.

In wind energy — which will account for 57% of all investments in the period — this means projects in Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Morocco.
