Gamesa said the move reflects current market conditions in the US and the failure to renew the production tax credit.
In July, Gamesa issued furloughs — temporary layoffs — to up to 165 workers at its production facilities in Pennsylvania. The furloughs affected the Fairless Hills nacelle plant, near Philadelphia, and the Ebensburg plant.
It is Q3 results, the Spanish manufacturer said its US orders had held up during the year thanks to a 480MW supply deal with Algonquin Power. However, there are few confirmed orders in the pipeline beyond this.
The cuts follow the announcement by Gamesa's new executive chairman Ignacio Martin that the company planned to cut 20% of its global workforce between now and Q1 2013 as part of a global restructuring plan.
The cuts will be mainly in China, the US and Europe, totalling around 1,800. Spain is likely to take the brunt of the European job losses with 500 redundancies.
The announcement was made as part of the company's strategy for 2013-15.
