SoWiTec to build 200MW project in Russia

RUSSIA: German SoWiTec Group is looking at investing RUB 6 billion ($180 million) in the construction of a wind farm in eastern Russia.

The new plant would have a capacity of up to 200MW and would be built by 2014-2015 in Yaroslavl Oblast.

If the plan comes to fruitition it could produce Russia's first major wind energy project. According to Windpower Monthly's Windicator, Russia only has 11MW of installed wind power capacity.

According to Igor Burakov, general director of the Investment Development Agency of the Rostov Region, the new wind farm would be located on the territory of the former gambling zone "Azov-City" on the coast of Taganrog Bay of the Azov Sea.

The project would involve the construction of up to 80 turbines and would be implemented in several stages. According to preliminary estimates by SoWiTec Group, the Rostov region has good wind potential.

SoWiTec Group said electricity produced at the Rostov wind farm would be sold to local consumers and in the neighboring Krasnodar region.
