Gamesa predicted to make 1000 job cuts

SPAIN: Global turbine manufacturer Gamesa plans extensive layoffs affecting as many as 1000 of its 5000 employees across Spain, its home-base country, according to numerous press reports, citing non-identified union sources.

While trade unions decline to offer an official figure, Clara Fernandez of manufacturing workers trade union CCOO declared: "we know with certainty layoffs will be extensive." Union blogs widely repeate the 1000 figure.

"Gamesa does not comment on rumours," a company spokeswoman told Windpower Monthly. She did, however, confirm the company was finalising a new business plan 2013-2015 to enable "the optimisation of resources".

Layoffs respond to a freeze on new domestic orders this year with the approach of the government's indefinite moratorium on new wind capacity in Spain after end-2012. In May, Gamesa closed nacelle production at Medina del Campo, one of three Spanish nacelle facilities, following the company's EUR21 million net loss for first quarter 2012.
