Repower announced extensions to its 3M wind turbine series. The 3.2MW and 3.4MW turbines have been recertified for higher wind speeds. Additionally, a 3MW version has been created for low wind locations. It has a 122-metre rotor (the 3.2MW comes with a 114-metre rotor) and a 139-metre hybrid tower. The first prototype will be built in the fourth quarter of 2013.
"With the new turbine type, we can achieve optimum energy yield at non-coastal sites with lower wind speeds, as well as in challenging areas such as hilly terrain or forests," said Matthias Schubert, chief technical officer at Repower.
Vestas has created a new version of its V112 3MW turbine with a 128-metre rotor and, as with Repower, the product is designed for class III wind conditions. The model also comes with a shell blade design. Vestas said the turbine is principally being designed for the European market and will be available the second quarter of next year.
"The rotor-swept area of the new V126-3.0MW wind turbine has been increased by 27% and the turbine is specifically designed to yield maximum power production on low wind sites," said Anders Vedel, Vestas' executive vice president for turbine research and development. "There is a huge need for larger rotor sizes in the low wind market, particularly in Europe, and the V126-3.0MW offers a new option for customers who want to combine the proven technology and serviceability of the 3MW platform with greater power output in low wind sites."
In the offshore sector, Areva launched its new blade system allowing it to transport and fit single blades rather than an entire rotor star. This enables cheaper and easier installation and a reduction in the space required. It is the first manufacturer to do this.
