Walmart installs GE turbine at distribution plant

UNITED STATES: Walmart, the world's largest retailer, has installed a 1.5MW GE turbine at one of its distribution centres.

Walmart said the turbine will provide the equivalent to 15-20% of the centre's energy needs. The turbine,  owned and operated by Foundation Windpower, is expected to be operational by the end of the year. It is based at Walmart's distribution centre in Red Bluff, California.

Walmart has a number of renewable energy projects in place. These include a 90MW wind farm in Texas and 14 stores in Northern Ireland that receive 100% of their energy needs from wind.

Matt Wilson, CEO of Foundation Windpower said: "We are delighted to have completed this project with Walmart and Tehama County. Foundation Windpower developed, financed and constructed this project with Walmart whose leadership and strategic commitment to sustainable, energy efficient operations have improved this distribution facility’s economic competitiveness and environmental impact."

In 2010, EDF Energies Nouvelles signed a power purchase agreement with Walmart for a wind farm in Oaxaca, in southern Mexico.

The La Mata Ventosa wind farm has a capacity of 67.5MW and is EDF's first wind project in Mexico. It is located in the Tehuantepec isthmus, where all four of the country's 2009 wind farms were based.

Other retailers to build wind projects to supply their stores include Ikea and FujiFilm.
