According to the BBC, the local coastguard has been inundated with emergency calls from people who have misinterpreted the mast's lights as SOS signals.
The 110-metre mast was installed last month 13 kilometres off of Brighton on the English Channel. developer E.on received permission to install the mast in September last year.
The proposed site is in shallow water close to the urban area of Brighton and Hove and with a possible landfall connection at the existing Shoreham power station.
E.on's regional renewables director Dave Rogers said that the inshore site meant that, given the go-ahead, the project could begin relatively quickly.
