US installed 6,816MW in 2011

UNITED STATES: The US installed 6,816MW in 2011, an increase of 31% on 2010's figure, according to AWEA.

The AWEA Annual Market Report 2011 showed 13 states produced more than 5% of their electricity from wind power. South Dakota was the top of this list with 23%, followed by Iowa (18.8%), North Dakota (14.7%) and Minnesota (12.7%).

Kansas was the top state for wind projects under construction in 2012 with 1,189MW. It was followed by Texas (857MW), California (847MW) and Oregon (640MW).

Iowa is the top state for wind energy jobs, with 6-7000 employed in the sector.

Speaking about the report, AWEA CEO Denise Bode said: "This shows what wind power is capable of: building new projects, powering local economies and creating jobs.

"Traditional tax incentives are working. This tremendous activity is being driven by the federal Production Tax Credit (PTC) – which leverages as much as $20 billion a year in private investment and supports tens of thousands of manufacturing jobs."

Other highlights from the report include:

  • Wind energy has brought in as much as $20 billion annually in private investment to the US.
  • Created nearly 500 new American manufacturing facilities and employed 75,000 overall, including 30,000 in the manufacturing sector.
  • One of the largest providers of new electric generation with 35% of new power capacity.
