EDP builds wind capacity despite Iberian slowdown

PORTUGAL: EDP's global installed wind power capacity increased by 12% to 7,483MW in 2011, according to advance annual results data published by Portugal's stock market regulator CMVM.

However, despite the global increase, growth in the Iberian market was significantly lower at 6.2%.

Data for capacity under construction reveals just 60MW out of a global 375MW being built in Portugal and Spain last year.

Wind generation in Spain was 5% higher despite a drop in load factor thanks to increased capacity. But even poorer wind conditions in Portugal saw production fall back nearly 6%.

Overall wind generation was up by 17% to 16,800GWh, outpacing the growth in capacity. This was largely thanks to the US and Central and Eastern Europe where production rose by 21% and 65% respectively year-on-year. Brazilian production was 451% higher following the installation of 70MW in May.
