Floating Lidar trialled in North Sea

BELGIUM: A full-size prototype of a floating Lidar offshore wind resource assessment system, known as a Flidar, has been successfully tested 15km off the Belgian coast.

The product has been developed by global energy consultant 3E and geotechnical contractor OWA, part of GeoSea, as part of the Offshore Wind Infrastructure project.

It is the first successful trial of a floating Lidar device in real offshore conditions in the North Sea.

Flidar is designed to withstand wave heights of more than six metres and has been tested in wind speeds of up to 25 metres per second.

Data from the device, based on an industry standard buoy, is retrieved and communicated to the shore via satellite.
