BMT signs vessel construction deal with Strategic Marine

AUSTRALIA: UK vessel designer BMT Nigel Gee has signed a “teaming agreement” with Australian shipbuilder Strategic Marine potentially allowing offshore vessels using British designs to be built in Asia.

Speaking about the deal, Strategic Marine’s chief marketing officer Terry O’Connor said: "This agreement gives us immediate access to many proven designs."

Strategic Marine was unable to disclose where the vessels would be built in Asia. However, it has shipbuilding facilities in Australia, Singapore and Vietnam.

O’Connor added: "Having attained significant success in the offshore oil and gas sector we can use our experience to work with BMT Nigel Gee developing world leading solutions for offshore operators."

BMT Nigel Gee, based in Southampton, England, is one of the world’s largest design consultancies for vessels.

Last month the company won a Carbon Trust supported contract to develop a new turbine access system (TAS) to transfer crew and equipment between crew vessels and offshore wind turbines.
