RWE to set up offshore facility in north Wales

UK: RWE npower has announced plans to build an offshore facility at the Port of Mostyn, north Wales, as part of its plan to develop the 576MW Gwynt y Mor wind farm.

RWE has also signed a three-year £5 million contract with Cammell Laird Shipyard to provide port and quayside facilties, and to load and fit out the foundations of the offshore wind turbines.

Mostyn will also be used an an offshore operations and maintenance base for the Rhyl Flats and North Hoyle wind farms.

Gwynt y Mor is owned by RWE Innogy (60%), Stadtwerke München (30%) and Siemens (10%). It is expected to start producing electricity by 2013. Overall completion is set for 2014.

The project will cost €2billion with €1.2billion of this going to Siemens, which has a five-year O&M contract. The budget also includes grid connections and two transformer platforms.

When complete, it will become the world’s second biggest offshore project behind the 1GW London Array.
