LM blade makers under threat in Spain

SPAIN: The Spanish division of Danish blade manufacturer LM Wind Power is expected to shed most of its workforce, after it told trade unions it had no orders beyond November.

The announcement appeared to support sector claims that the Spanish wind industry is grinding to a halt due to government failure to produce a new pay scheme for wind-power production beyond end-2012, when the current mechanism expires.

Local turbine manufacturer Gamesa closed its Alsasua blade factory early this year after US giant GE had ended its turbine-manufacturing activity in Spain.

In August, the regional government of Castile and León authorised LM Wind Power's plan to lay off more than half of its 450 remaining workers at its biggest factory in Spain, located in Ponferrada.

Spanish trade unions claimed LM Wind Power would employ some 200 people by November, down from the 1,300 the company claimed were working at its three Spanish blade factories in 2008.

LM Wind Power was unavailable to comment on the trade unions' claims.
