XEMC signs turbine deal with the Maldives

MALDIVES: Chinese turbine manufacturer XEMC has signed a 50MW deal with Maldives State Electric Company (STELCO).

The Maldives issued a tender in November last year to build a wind project near the islands’ capital of Male. It hopes to become the world’s first carbon-neutral state by 2020.

As much of Male island is built up, the project will be on the neighbouring island of Hulhumale (see map below).

In the tender document, STELCO said it intended to purchase 20MW "from renewable sources".

In recent years, the Maldives has made a number of moves to introduce wind power to the islands. In November 2009, Suzlon signed a memorandum of understanding with the Maldives to build a 25MW project. However, a contract was never signed.
