The call was made by the Industry, Research and Energy committee (ITRE). Currently, EC target aims to generate 20% of all energy from renewable sources across all 27 member states.
Additionally, the ITRE is requesting the EC looks at placing restrictions on CO2 emissions across the EU.
The ITRE vote comes as the EC is set to vote on a report by Green MEP Bas Eickhout looking at whether the EU should increase its 2020 target beyond 20%.
In March, EU commissioner for climate change Connie Hedegaard said renewable energy could supply the whole of the EU’s electricity consumption by 2050.
