SPAIN: Spanish wind marked a double monthly record in March, becoming the top power producer, beating both gas-fired and nuclear power, according to grid operator Red Eléctrica de España (REE).

The 4738 GWh generated by wind was also an all-time monthly best, and covered 21% of national electricity demand.

Together with other technologies, renewables covered 42.2% of electricity demand over the month.

The figure is down from 48.5% for the same period last year, which is largely due to higher rainfall).

It remains above the 40% annual target to 2020, set to meet EU objectives. Renewables have covered 40.5% of electricity demand over the first quarter of 2011.

Previously, wind power’s best comparative monthly performance was in November and December 2009, when it covered 21.2% and 20.1% of national demand. It respectively, toppled nuclear power from second place.

Production from Spain’s nearly 21GW of installed wind capacity last month was enough to cover the demand of 13 million homes or neighbouring Portugal’s entire electricity consumption, points out national wind association Asociación Empresarial Eólica (AEE).
